Vitamin D deficiency

With all European countries urging people to stay home to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease that has undesirably marked the vast majority of the year, it doesn’t come as a surprise that many of us are on the lookout for ways to strengthen our immune systems.

Except for work and running essential errands, most of us are confined to our homes due to social distancing measures and it is only natural for concerns to arise about how to keep the unfortunate combo lack of sunlight + lack of exercise + lack of proper nutrition at bay until springtime.

Do you get this every winter?

Does it ever occur to you that you keep complaining how tired you feel all the time and coming down with random colds, even more so during winter months? How about catching yourself feeling down for absolutely no reason? And let’s not even get started on those aches in your bones and muscles, shall we?

All of these could mean you are not getting enough vitamin D.

What is vitamin D and why do we need it?

The so-called sunshine vitamin is made when our skin is exposed to sunlight. It is also found in certain foods, such as fatty fish and egg yolks.

Vitamin D3 plays many crucial roles in your body:

  • Contributes to normal immune system function

  • Helps maintain normal muscle function

  • Supports normal bone and teeth

  • Contributes to normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus

  • Supports normal cell division

As much as vitamin D is vital for our bodies, a huge population is lacking it.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread

Insufficient vitamin D intake is extremely widespread; it is believed that about 1 billion people around the world are subjected to this problem.*In Europe, around 40-75% of the population is low in this crucial vitamin.

Everyone needs vitamin D!

The short, dark days in Europe between October and April mean we’re not exposed to sunlight enough, so vitamin D can’t be produced in adequate quantities and we need to obtain it elsewhere.

Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to reach sufficient levels with fish and egg yolks alone; staying mostly indoors and having a few kilos too many are important risk factors too! Fat cells in the body act as reservoirs for vitamin D, making it less available to the body.

As symptoms can be subtle and difficult to recognise especially during the winter months, it is important that you take action now.

If there was one vitamin we’d urge everyone to start taking this winter, it would certainly be vitamin D.

You too can benefit from D3 supplementation and get the sunshine vitamin that’s crucial for your immune system, healthy bones and normal muscle function.
