Vitamin B12 capsules contain the best possible form of B12: methylcobalamin. It is natural, bioidentical and biologically active, which means the body can recognise and use it immediately. As a result, more B12 is absorbed and stored in the body for a longer period of time.
Compared to cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form of B12 often found in supplements, methylcobalamin supplementation allows for:
3x* more B12 to stay in the body
13%* more to be stored in the liver
Contrary to popular belief, not just vegetarians and vegans but around 40% of the general population have an undersupply of B12. Supplementation is especially beneficial for:
Vegans and Vegetarians – Since B12 only comes from animal products, vegans and vegetarians face a very high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Prevalence of deficiency ranges from 7% of the EU population 3 years and older to 90% among vegans!
Older people – Experts estimate that up to 20% of those over 50 have low levels of vitamin B12 as our ability to absorb nutrients decreases with age.
People taking certain medications to lower blood sugar or polycystic ovary syndrome – Metformin, a medicine, can affect vitamin B12 absorption in the small intestine. Therefore, supplementation is critical when taking this medication.
People suffering from Crohn's disease or gluten intolerance – these conditions worsen the absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestine.
Pregnant and lactating mothers - The daily need for vitamin B12 is higher in pregnant and lactating mothers.
People under a lot of stress - An increased stress level can ensure that your B12 reserves are used up heavily
Normal immune system function
Reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Normal energy-yielding metabolism
The process of cell-division
Normal nervous system function
Normal homocysteine levels – key for heart health
Normal amino-acid synthesis
Vitamin B12 plays a crucial part in your metabolism, providing energy for the normal function of every cell in your body. Its role starts with tasks as fundamental as red blood cell production. Your body makes red blood cells at the rate of millions per second. When vitamin B12 levels are too low, the production drops, which can result in anaemia.
But there’s more. Low vitamin B12 levels have also been associated with cognitive decline, nerve damage and memory loss. And studies show up to 30%* of patients hospitalised for depression are B12 deficient. Aside from keeping your nervous system healthy, it also increases your white blood cell count, which boosts your immune system.
As B12 and folate are interdependent, a lack of B12 can indirectly cause folate deficiency. That’s why we’ve added folate to the formula as well. They’re both essential for the production of DNA and RNA which are required for cell growth and new cell formation. As your body can’t produce them itself, regular intake is vital for good health and well-being.
Our Vitamin B12 offers a high dose of 1,000 µg of B12 (methylcobalamin) per capsule. Why such a high dose, you may ask. Because not all of B12 gets absorbed.
In general, your body only absorbs about 11.5 µg of a 1,000 µg dose. The rest of it is either stored or excreted through urine (as B12 is water-soluble) if your stores are full. That's why no maximum intake limit has been set and an overdose has been considered impossible.
Aside from methylcobalamin, these capsules also contain methylfolate, the best possible form of folate.
The form usually found in supplements is folic acid, a synthetic form of folate, which has to be metabolised to methylfolate to be used by the body. But over 50% of people have a decreased enzyme activity, which results in lower levels of bioactive methylfolate.
That's why Vitamin B12 capsules only contain the highly bioavailable methylfolate – for maximum effect.
